John Ross Elementary School opened in 1983.
John Ross was the first and only elected Chief of the Cherokee Nation from the time it was formed until his death in 1866. He was instrumental in the introduction of school for the Cherokee people. Our school was named after him because of his educational ambitions. His supporters were appropriately named “Nighthawks”, hence the mascot of John Ross Elementary School.
